Fashion Swap Q&A

• What to bring:

5 Clean gently-used fashionable clothing items.  Too big, too little, but nice and just right for someone else. No stains, rips, tears, or repairs. No intimates, plain jeans, or tees.

Make sure to bring your hot & sexy club gear/ freak ‘em/ party dresses!  For every freak’ em dress you bring earn an entry to win prizes. Including the first selection from the swap!

• Can I bring shoes or jewelry?

Accessories are welcome in addition to the 5 clothing items + $16 for admission.

• If it starts at 5:30 will I make it in time? (Yes, come out.)
  

Doors open at 5:30, but Sweet Roll respects the curvy girl. Though arriving early is recommended, swapping starts about 6:30 so you don’t break your neck getting there.

• Small plates and entertainment as well as fashion are included in this girls’ night out.  

• “But I’m a size __”
  

And?  You better come on girl!  — It’s a curvy swap for a reason.  And if it helps you feel better, bring a girlfriend that’s also your size.

I take great pride in organizing the Sweet Roll events. Like my card says, I work really hard to create a “fulfilling fashion experience for the contemporary curvy girl.”

At the seasonal Sweet Roll curvy girl fashion swaps (next one, Aug 2. Venue, to be announced. Click here to see the flier) not only do I get the chance to see women take so much delight in getting new fabulous clothing in a setting made just for them, but I get to  hear how overjoyed so many first timers are to fall into what may as well be called a fellowship of fabulous curvy women. 

Plugging into the plus size shopping world is something like a sisterhood, if you will. That’s why it is so interesting to know that there is an actual bona fide big girl sorority.  I came across them while stumbling through Twitter…

According to their website, Phi Nu Delta Psi Incorporated, is “a non-collegiate social sorority for plus size women aged 21 and up, was established to promote sisterhood and help BBWs take their lives to another level.”  They have chapters on both coasts, including one in NYC, with chapters sprinkled in between.  The group’s website says they assist in community projects for the disadvantaged.  They also have an organizational youth initiative to cultivate self-esteem, accountability, responsibility, integrity and self-respect in young women.

Interesting.

This is my collection of scarves. 

I love them.  Their patterns and colors make me happy.  However, unlike earrings for the ear, belts for the waist, or shoes for the feet,  how and where on your body to  put that scarf often requires a little inspiration and reference.  Indulge yourself in our scarf tying insight and references and be fabulous!:

Step 1. The right material

Scarves like other pieces of clothing, come in all kinds of material.   There is nothing as needlessly drape polyester on any part of your body on a 90 degree day.  So shop smart

• Cotton is always your friend.
• Wear the larger or heavier pashmina you love at night when its cooler

Step 2. Where to purchase unique scarves

• Most vintage stores or vintage clothes sellers, like those at the Brooklyn Flea, tend to have a $5 bin.  I find that great and more unique items, including the lessor sold square neck/pocket scarf, turn up here. 
• Street fairs and street vendors There is usually more than one vendor selling pashminas 3 for $10 at a street fair. Go get ‘em. In NYC, especially there is no shortage of such opportunities (See a complete list of NYC street fairs here.)
• Cultural celebrations (including street fairs) Not only will you find items that are not massed distributed to the average store, but in many cases you can buy authentic wares.
  
• Go to the fabric store and make your own.  It’s as simple as going to pick a fabric you like, and taking it to the cutting counter.
  

Step 3. Styling the scarf

A scarf is as versatile as you are willing to be.  It can be a pocket or neck accentuation, a headwrap, a belt, a hair tie.  A lot of things, a  a lot of ways.  Here are some inspirations, diagrams, and even a youtube tutorial from plus size style blogger @Toya_GrayPastel.

• 30+ ways to tie a scarf with graphics and step by step tutorial by silk designer Textere.  They even publish The Ultimate Scarf Tying Book (available for pdf download for $9 on their site)

• The ULTIMATE youtube tutorial, showing you 25 ways to tie a scarf in under 5 minutes

And here’s a quick and easy turban tutorial from Twitter’s @Toya_GrayPastel (http://thegraypastel.com/).

It does!  The NYC Stuff Exchange,  http://nyc.gov/stuffexchange was created by the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling (like the previously-blogged-about RefashioNYC local clothing donation boxes) and has been around since 2007.

It’s graphically pleasing to look at and something like a NYC exclusive Craigslist, though we must admit for something to have been around so long and such a good concept, it really should have some more content on it.

Then why oh why, Sweet Roll Entertainment, are you telling us about this?  Becaussssse…

Use it find consignment and resale shops throughout the 5 boroughs.  By clicking on the  “Where to Sell” button you can search by borough or within a measured radius from your home (we shall call it your “shopping radius.”)  In Brooklyn it actually turned up 4 results, some find I was unaware of, but am now eager to explore like Olive’s Very Vintage in Brooklyn.  (What is that?   I don’t know, but I’m excited!!!)

Because Sweet Roll sends unswapped business clothes to Bottomless Closet NYC, a work training program for disadvantaged women, we  submitted our upcoming “Hotter Than July” fashion swap to the calendar of events.  Check for us!

Is this your first Sweet Roll Swap? We’re committed to fun events with quality items.  Here’s what to bring:

Gently-used items means “likes new”– Bring something in the condition that you would like to receive it. That means:

• No rips, tear, stains (grease, pit, bleach or otherwise).
• Nothing broken, stitched, or pinned together.
• Clean.
• No plain cotton tees or dollar store quality fashion.

Though only accessible through the Vogue Italy site [insert mixed feelings face here],  Vogue Curve or V Curve, is a publication for curvy women done exactly right. 

Congruent with the quality of mainstream/ “straight-sized” catalog, Vogue also goes the distance for us, breaking V Curve into several meaningful sections.  Lookbooks. Accessories. Written and video blog snippets (including from some from NY stylists). And of course delicious spreads. And all the sections feature legitimate curvy girls, in assorted sizes, not just 10′s and 12′s, or even the 8′s some companies try to get over with. (Like we don’t know.)

Vogue Curve was also launched 2010 along with other specialty publications Vogue Black and Vogue Talents, showcasing a trifecta of groups that are snubbed by the fashion industry — curvy women,  women of African descent, and emerging designers respectively. 

Some say she’s a genius for “just” picking up on marketing trends ahead of time, but you have got to love Sozanni’s sentiments in which ask Women’s Wear Daily. “Why should these women slim down? Many of the women who have a few extra kilos are especially beautiful and also more feminine, ” she says.  According to the Huffington Post, Sozzani has also been an activist again pro-anorexia websites.

Sounds like a curvy girl she-ro if I ever heard of one.
